OLGA A. C. IBSEN RDH, MS, FAADH - Olga A.C. Ibsen is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut and formerly an Adjunct Professor at New York University College of Dentistry in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine. She has made significant contributions to the Dental Hygiene Profession as an educator, clinician, author and editor. Olga has played a significant role in the clinical practice of dental hygiene for over 35 years. She co-authored the textbook “Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist” published by Elsevier (now in its 7th Edition). Ms. Ibsen is a contributing author to all eight editions of Mosby’s Comprehensive Review of Dental Hygiene and to Mosby’s Review Questions for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. She presents CE courses on Oral Pathology at dental and dental hygiene meetings nationally and internationally.  She is a Consultant Member to the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB) where she prepares and evaluates test questions. Additionally, she serves on the editorial advisory board for “Dimensions of Dental Hygiene”.  In 2016, she received The Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene from the ADHA and in 2017 the Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award from Dimensions of Dental Hygiene.

Course Title: Oral Pathology for the Dental Professional

Course Description: Oral Pathology for the Dental Professional - This course covers the seven diagnostic methods that contribute to a final diagnosis. They include the following features: clinical, radiographic, historical, laboratory, surgical, therapeutic, and differential methodology. Several lesions and conditions in each category will be discussed from etiology to prognosis. The strength of the diagnosis for each lesion will come from one or more diagnostic methods. Lesions will include those associated with the inflammatory process, immunity, infectious disease, developmental disorders, genetics, neoplasia, and oral manifestations of systemic disease.  Documentation procedures, biopsy techniques and referral options will also be explored. Remember that statistically, one patient dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. This course will provide you with an enlightened, highly informed approach to managing oral lesions and conditions.

Participant Objectives:

Describe the ‘gold standard’ in the diagnosis process

• List seven diagnostic methods with examples of successfully diagnosed lesions/conditions

• Identify the characteristics of both benign and malignant pathology

• Differentiate patient medical history information that may be contributory to a successful diagnosis

• Identify and describe leukoplakia, erythroplakia, radicular, residual, dentigerous and primordial cysts

• Define and describe three genetic conditions discussed under clinical or historical  diagnosis
